   Fascinating Science Facts:

Imbrasia Belina, Southern Africa

The Anomalous Emperor moth are moth is light brown in color and members of the Family: Saturniidae and possess distinct spots on each wing which resemble "bulls eyes" to mimic "eye spots" to confuse and scare predators away. The emperor/mopane moth caterpillars are basically an african silk moth and the adults of the "worm" are considered a delicacy and they are found in Mopane trees and are savored by both birds and man, and in particular by people in Southern Africa. The caterpillars also eat heather, bramble, sallow and other plants which are found on heaths.

One of the most difficult periods of the year for the moth to survive are the months just before the harvest. Fortunately during this period caterpillars can be harvested from forest trees which foliate before the start of the rainy season. farming of this moth has made this and other similar enterprises economically inviable. The Anomalous Emperor Moth's Classification is Lepidoptera: Saturniid Lepidopteran or Saturniidae (plural of family name)
